What the Hell is this, Russia?!? Marketing to SNAP

Woonsocket, RI – Where Everybody Eats the Government Cheese

The “federal program that began as a last resort for a few million hungry people, has grown into an economic lifeline for entire towns.”

The program now called SNAP, formerly “Food Stamps” has grown exponentially in the past 4 years. It’s up to $78 Billion a year. BILLION! To put that into perspective, the Golden Gate freaking bridge cost just $1 Billion dollars and took 10 years to build!

The Washington Post wrote an article that explains how one-third of the town gets a portion of $2 million dollars a month in spending power on a SNAP card. On the first day of the month, the money is available, and the food stores in the town all pull out all the stops to attract the SNAP customers their way.

In just one day, the first of each month, $2 million dollars is spent on a months worth of groceries. “Every store has a gimmick” to get the SNAP card wielding customers to spend their, uh the Government’s, um … OUR money.

The Washington Post did an article on this phenomenon. It’s written a little like an NPR story, but it’s a jaw dropper. You can read the article yourself here: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-03-16/national/37768635_1_mother-s-day-food-stamps-woonsocket

No matter what your opinion of the practice may be, and no matter what you think of the money coming from the Government, it is interesting that with a two million dollar pay day on the first day of each month, all of the food store owners suddenly become decent marketers. If they are going to draw a portion of that money their way, they have to shout the loudest and create offers that attract the customers.

It’s one day of hell, followed by 27 – 29 days of boredom. But, because of the Government creating a false economy there, if done right, that single day can keep a business owner in business all month.

I just have one question: Are there opportunities, like jobs or education, in other parts of the country?

OK, so that’s obvious right? We all know there is opportunity in other parts of the country. Heck, there is probably opportunity right there in Woonsocket.

So, since the amount of SNAP money just keeps increasing every month in Woonsocket, that would suggest that at least one-third of the population is willing to live off of the efforts of the other two-thirds of the population. When you deduct the amount of Government employees from the town, how many are you left with?

I’m not sure of the number of people paying into the system, but I’m sure they can’t truly support everyone else.

And, it’s also quite obvious that the people taking the handout are willing to take it. In fact, they probably need it because the Government, in their infinite wisdom, have created dependence and entitlement in those people.

What Do You Think?

Crazy isn’t it? But even in a false economy, marketers are working to pull that money to their bank accounts. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below.
